Santa's Elves
The tradition of Santa's elves most likely evolved from Scandanavian folklore. Elves or gnomes where believed to live in peoples homes and could be either good or evil depending on the person. They have magical powers may give good luck to the people they like. Nobody says what they do to people they dislike.
In the mid-1800s Scandinavian writers stated that the true purpose of the elves where to help Father Christmas. They have the tasks of helping Santa keep track of the children and which ones are naughty and which ones are nice, as well as making toys and caring for and cleaning up after the reindeer.
